How to measure a room for carpet
- Measure the room to determine the exact dimensions.
- Measure from the base board, NOT the quarter round.
- Measure into the doorway where the seam will be made.
To determine the approximate quantity of carpet you will
need, multiply the length (feet) of the room by its width (feet) for the
square footage. To obtain the square yardage, divide that figure by 9.
Add 10 percent to account for room irregularities and pattern match. It is
best to have your retailer or installer make final measurements to ensure
that you purchase the correct amount. As professionals, they know how to
include hallways and closets, match patterns, plan seam placement, work
with room irregularities, and account for rooms with widths greater than
12 feet. (Most carpet is produced in 12- and 15-foot widths.) Dealers may
sell by the square foot or the square yard.
Note:
 | Most carpet is 12' wide (some 13'6" or 15' so
ask about these special widths).
 | Always measure your room, NEVER take dimensions off a
blueprint.
 | Because of the way carpet is manufactured, it must be
installed with the nap all in the same direction so that seams are
less visible. You can NOT estimate your floor covering needs by taking
the room area and converting it into square yards.
Our sales people will assist you with estimating your material needs.
